Alginates are naturally occurring, biodegradable polysaccharides extracted from brown seaweed. They are water-soluble thickeners and have the unique ability to thicken and form gels in the presence of calcium ions. These seaweed-derived polymers combine multiple functional properties: cold/hot water solubility, viscosity and gelation, rheology modification, suspension, and film forming.

They are powerful at low concentrations. In paints and inks, alginates improve stability and homogeneity; they offer a natural alternative to non-renewable synthetic polymers, provide processing benefits in textile printing, and deliver improved surface strength and reduced porosity in paper sizing applications.

Roquette’s alginate portfolio for industrial solutions includes Scogin® and Protaweld® products manufactured in a wide variety of viscosities and gel strengths. Properties can be adapted by blending different types of alginate extracts, sequestrants, and calcium salts to optimize performance. All our Alginate products are backed by Technical Service, Quality, Regulatory and R&D teams.

Why choose Scogin® Alginates

Scogin® alginates are highly-functional products spanning a wide  range of viscosities and gel strengths to meet a diverse set of processing requirements

  • Functional properties Cold/hot water solubility
  • Viscosity and gelation
  • Naturally occurring biopolymer: safe, renewable, and consumer-friendly
  • Rheology modification
  • Suspension agent
  • Film forming
  • Powerful at low concentrations

Scogin®, Markets & Applications

  • Performance Materials and Construction: in paints, coatings, and inks, alginates improve stability and homogeneity and are a natural alternative to non-renewable or synthetic polymers. In textile printing, they thicken and improve print paste processing; they are non-reactive and easy to wash off, with good color yield and levelness. In packaging, alginates offer unique film-forming and barrier properties
  • Paper & board: Alginates offer barrier properties and additional benefits in paper sizing, coated paper and board, as well as in various specialty paper applications
  • Other industrial applications: in water treatment, alginates help improve clarification, sludge dewatering, and the removal of pollutants

Why choose Protaweld®

Protaweld® alginates are specifically designed for welding applications, leveraging alginate’s unique gelling capability and cost-effective performance. They combine desirable properties in one biopolymer.
