Excipients for Liquid Solutions: Liquid Polyol, Maltitol, and Sorbitol

These formulations offer flexibility, patient compliance, and reliable dosing for both over-the-counter and prescription medicines. But liquid dosage forms face unique technical hurdles—crystallization, sedimentation, and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) degradation—that require specialized excipients.

Polyols 

NEOSORB® 70/70 B sorbitol and LYCASIN® 80/55 maltitol serve as sugar-free bulk sweeteners that replace sucrose while delivering a pleasant taste profile and improved dietetic properties. Their ability to reduce crystallization enhances the manufacturability of syrups, while supporting patient compliance through favorable sweetness and mouthfeel. 

Glucose Syrups 

GLUCIDEX® liquid glucose provides both bulking and sweetness while also contributing isotonicity, making them particularly valuable in oral and parenteral liquids. They contribute to API solubility and prevent precipitation in some syrup systems. Their versatility supports formulation robustness, offering reliable consistency and ease of processing across a wide range of applications. 

Buffering Agents 

Sodium gluconate helps maintain stable pH levels in sensitive formulations, protecting APIs against degradation and extending shelf life. This buffering capacity not only safeguards drug performance but also improves patient safety by maintaining product integrity over time. Its compactibility across pediatric and geriatric formulations makes it a safe and flexible option. 

Suspension Agents 

TABULOSE® SC co-processed microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) offers fast hydration and excellent viscosity control while preventing sedimentation in suspensions. By ensuring uniform distribution of active ingredients, it enables accurate dosing and enhances the patient experience. 

Cyclodextrins 

KLEPTOSE® cyclodextrins improve the solubility of poorly soluble APIs while stabilizing molecules prone to degradation or precipitation. In liquid forms, they support both efficacy and reliability, making them an indispensable tool for challenging formulations. Our hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrins (HPβCDs) are pharmacopeial and accepted for oral and parenteral forms.
