Addressing health and wellness through plant-based nutrition

Consumers are increasingly concerned about their health and are adopting a more proactive approach to their wellness.

According to the last Innova Consumer Trends Report, health and well-being remain the top spending priority for consumers, with the primary goal of healthier living being to “feel well”.

Consumers quest for health and wellness

This translates to healthier food choices, with 67% of consumers changing their food habits towards healthier options in the past two years (Kantar Food 360™ multi-country market research – 2022).

Food, health, and fitness were already Instagram’s top themes for years, but recently, we have seen an increase in all the immune boosting, immune health posts… The same increase was also observed on Google Trends. Health is still a key driver for consumer expectations in new product development. This trend is seen across all age groups.

Despite the inflation, consumers will not make compromises on health. Across all income levels, consumers think that health is the top priority to drive the development of new food and beverages (Innova Trends Survey 2023).

Nutrition is part of a healthy lifestyle along with other activities like exercise to help us get the best out of life as we live longer and don’t want to be dependent on others.

Gut health, Prebiotics effects, and Immunity

  • Digestive health is also a big trend in food. Two of three global consumers recognize the importance of gut health*. People are becoming more aware of the microbiota as good bacteria to take care of in the gut.

What a customer can claim on products depends on regulations in each country. About half of global consumers are also aware of prebiotics and the link between prebiotics, digestive health, and immunity. According to FMCG Gurus 2022, consumers associate gut health with various benefits. About 37% associate it with well-being, 42% with more energy, and 35% with cognitive performance. Gut health also impacts our overall health and maintenance of immune health. Many people want to improve their immune health after the COVID-19 pandemic.

About 63% of global consumers want proof of clinically proven claims and scientific evidence on packaging when looking for a new product (FMCG Gurus 2022).

Customers can help address this by offering more than one health benefit at the same time by using NUTRIOSE® in a product.  Our soluble fiber can be used in any application of food and beverage, such as in healthy snacks for people wanting something quick and healthy along with clinically proven benefits, like improved digestive health, blood glucose management, weight management, satiety and sustained energy release.
