Roquette and Royal Canin Partner for Sustainable Pet Nutrition
Published October 28, 2026
Roquette and Royal Canin partner to support regenerative agriculture through an innovative co-investment model developed with Soil Capital.

Roquette is pleased to announce a new commercial agreement with Royal Canin and Mars Petcare, underscoring a shared commitment to sustainability. This agreement serves as a foundation for a collaborative regenerative agriculture initiative, in partnership with Soil Capital.
Beyond a sourcing agreement, this partnership introduces a co-investment model, bringing together a global pet nutrition brand, an ingredient supplier and a regenerative agriculture expert to support measurable progress across the value chain.
A partnership structured to deliver both supply and impact
The partnership is built on two complementary pillars:
- Reliable Supply of Raw Materials: Roquette delivers high-quality, traceable, and safe ingredients to Royal Canin’s factories in Europe, ensuring consistency and reliability aligned with the expectations of pet owners.
- Joint Investment in Regenerative Agriculture: Roquette and Royal Canin are co-investing in a regenerative agriculture program, implemented with Soil Capital. This model enables shared financing of the agricultural transition, with both companies contributing to support farmers adopting regenerative practices.
This initiative represents the first Soil Capital co-investment partnership between a buyer and a supplier, covering more than 60 farms and more than 4,700 hectares in France.
A shared response to sustainability challenges
Both Roquette and Royal Canin are accelerating their efforts to address scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, which represent a significant part of their environmental footprint.
Royal Canin, part of Mars Incorporated, has committed to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, with a 50% reduction target by 2030 (vs. 2015 baseline).
Roquette has validated its climate targets with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), committing to a 25% reduction in scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 2030 (vs. 2021 baseline).
This partnership allows both companies to strengthen their action within shared agricultural value chains, where ingredient sourcing plays a key role.
A practical co-investment model: Resolving a methodological deadlock
One of the key challenges addressed in this collaboration was the difference in carbon accounting methodologies between partners.
In practice, Royal Canin and Roquette do not account for the conversion factor between wheat and wheat gluten in the same way: Royal Canin uses economic allocation, commonly used in the pet food industry, while Roquette uses mass allocation, commonly used in the starch industry.
“Rather than aligning methods, we adopted a pragmatic solution supported by Soil Capital: one shared program, two parallel accounting frameworks, and one verified data source.”
Magali Amouroux, Global Sustainability Manager chez Roquette
This approach enables both companies to contribute to the same program while maintaining compliance with their respective reporting standards.
What this means for farmers
At the farm level, the co-investment model provides stronger and more stable financial support for the transition to regenerative practices. Under the Soil Capital model, 70% of the value of each Soil Capital Certificate goes directly to the farmer, a result-based incentive that ensures co-investment translates into concrete financial support on the ground.
Compared to unilateral approaches, co-investment:
- Creates a clear and consistent demand signal.
- Enables multi-year visibility, which is essential for investment decisions.
- Encourages broader adoption of regenerative practices.
A model designed to be replicated
The structure developed through this partnership is intended to be scalable and replicable, across other crops, additional geographies, and broader supplier networks.
“Partnership is no longer a ‘nice to have’; it is a strategic necessity. This initiative illustrates how supplier–customer collaboration can drive both scope 3 progress and resilience across agricultural value chains.”
Alice Rime, Sales Manager Animal Nutrition chez Roquette
The case study identifies five conditions that made this model work and that can support its replication:
- Methodological alignment is not always mandatory.
- A trusted third party makes it possible.
- Start with one supply chain, then scale.
- Commit for multiple years.
- Define claim sharing rules before signing an agreement.
Looking ahead
This partnership demonstrates how supplier–customer collaboration can translate sustainability ambitions into concrete action across agricultural value chains. It reflects Roquette’s ongoing commitment to supporting sustainable sourcing, advancing regenerative agriculture programs, and contributing to measurable climate impact.
We thank all the teams who contributed to this milestone and look forward to the continued development of this initiative alongside our partners.
