As the leader in the production, technology and application of polyols (sugar alcohols), Roquette offers the broadest range, including sorbitol, maltitol, mannitol, xylitol and isosorbide.
The histories of Roquette and polyols (e.g. Sorbitol) are tightly entwined. Indeed Sorbitol, which was produced during WWII as a substitute for glycerin for military use, was then limited to a few chemical and pharmaceutical applications.
In the early 1950’s, Roquette planned to produce Sorbitol on a large scale, and was resolved to find - thanks to the research department - new applications, such as humectant in cosmetology and sugar substitute in non cariogenic confectionery.
Then other polyols were added to the list: LYCASIN® maltitol syrup, mannitol, maltitol, xylitol, isosorbide. This marketing network covers the globe, enabling Roquette to supply polyols anywhere in the world. And always with the same quality service in logistics and technical assistance. Finally, Roquette set up polyol production units in the United States, South Korea and China.
Today, Roquette is known as the global leader in polyols.
There are now two main lines in the group's development: health nutrition and plant chemistry.
Health and nutrition
The numerous scientific publications on the nutritional benefits of polyols on the body enhance the image of polyols in human nutrition – based on health, well-being and good balance.
In reaction to global warming and the depletion of fossil fuels, Roquette has been developing plant chemistry as a means to replace petrochemistry.
Polyols such as isosorbid play an important part in this forward-looking strategic commitment.
