Panel discussion

“If food biotechs pivot away from the food sector, who will lose and who will win?”

Food biotech’s have been in the spotlight over the past decade with precision fermentation and cell cultured meat startups raising millions of dollars as they aim to make food production more sustainable. However, many are now facing challenges with scaling up and cost economics as many of them are working on bulk proteins with lower margins.

When food biotech startups confront the formidable challenge of achieving market prices for food ingredients and the significant capex involved in producing these ingredients, they often consider pivoting towards higher value, higher margin ingredients in adjacent sectors such as nutraceuticals, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, advanced materials, etc.

We are seeing more of such pivots happening in the past year as startups focus on turning self-sufficient. Some characterize it as a strategic shift, while others remain optimistic about the possibility of returning to food ingredients eventually. However, undertaking such a pivot presents its unique set of challenges. In this panel discussion, we discuss on who will lose and who will win.
