Roquette Performance Materials Talking Trends

Roquette and Novamont delved into the factors influencing the packaging market, the challenges at hand, and how Novamont collaborates with Roquette to address them!

Roquette Performance Materials Talking Trends
A series of interviews and success stories, where we question ourselves on the challenges and trends shaping the sustainable materials market.

A rising demand for innovative and flexible packing solutions

The global packaging market is expected to register a compound annual growth rate of 3.94% during the period of 2022-2027.

While there is rising demand from the industry for innovative and flexible packing solutions, the use of recycled and recyclable materials is increasing as the industry needs to meet greater sustainability.

Packaging that is eco-friendly is not limited to recycling alone, as the sustainability of packaging can also be improved by taking into consideration the production process and the raw materials used.

Bioplastics have a major role to play in sustainable packaging

Bioplastics play a major role in the shift to more sustainable packaging. Half of the world’s bioplastic production now goes into packaging, and more than half of all bioplastics are now biodegradable.

Bio-based plastics are now an efficient and technologically mature material, bringing both sustainability and innovation to producers in the development of smart, eco-friendly, and circular packaging solutions.

As an example, polybutylene succinate (PBS) makes a great candidate. It can be used in a variety of packing applications, including food packaging, films, or bags. It offers excellent barrier and mechanical properties, making it a viable alternative to traditional plastics. Unlike conventional plastics, PBS can biodegrade in the environment, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.

All in all, PBS contributes to cleaner end-of-life options and lower disposal costs where it is impossible to reuse or recycle.

How can companies collaborate to address industry challenges?

To better understand the factors shaping the packaging market,  Jiae Kim, Marketing Manager for Roquette Performance Materials had a chat with Stefano Facco, New Business Development Director, and Alberto Fragapane, from the External Relations and Study Center, both from Novamont, an international leader in the bioplastics sector and in the development of biochemicals.

They discussed the challenges faced by the industry and the positive impact bioplastics bring in the shift towards more sustainability in the packaging production process, and how Novamont and Roquette work together to tackle them.
