Join Peter Freed Ph.D., Head of Global Pharma Customer Technical Support, and Arnaud Verhaeghe, Head of Oral Dosage Market, to learn more about next-gen coatings.
About the Webinar
The pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries have traditionally relied on hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the standard polymers for immediate release coatings for solid oral dosage forms.
These polymers are commonplace due to their robustness and well understood film-forming properties.
However, the increasing global emphasis on sustainability, efficiency, and consumer-friendly solutions necessitates the exploration of innovative alternatives.
This webinar will describe a solution that originates from pea-starch and provides formulators with a solution which allows more sustainability, process efficiency, patient adherence and consumer experience for their pharmaceutical and nutraceutical formulations.
In this webinar, we will present:
Why coatings are important and the considerations when choosing a coating technology.
- Purpose of coatings
- Types of coatings for immediate release in the market and the relative advantages/applications of each
- Coating process steps
- Considerations when choosing a coating
Qualitative formulation and compendial status
A comparative study of starch-based vs. HPMC and PVA coatings
- Suspension preparation
- Coating parameters – highlighting low temp starch coating
- Film properties – tensile strength, elasticity, adhesion
- Coating gloss, color, rugosity
- Ease of equipment cleaning for starch-based vs. HPMC
Comparison of safety, sustainability, and efficiency factors
- Efficiency gains – in process time and cleaning
- Power consumption comparison – savings due to lower process temperature and shorter processing time
- Benefits of processing at low temperature
- Alternative to organic solvent-based coatings using either HPMC or PVA
- Less risk of degradation or oxidation
