Frequently asked questions for GLUCIDEX®

GLUCIDEX® is a large family of maltodextrins and dehydrated glucose syrups with a variety of characteristic powder properties. IT, PREMIUM, P and W attributes are differentiating grades of the same DE value as follow:
- IT stands for "Instant" indicating an improved dissolution through a granulation step.
- PREMIUM indicates tight microbial specifications for formulations targeting a patient population sensitive to microbial risk (e.g., immature patients or with decreased immunity like newborn infants).
- P and W refer to the botanical origin, respectively potato and wheat. When there is no special indication of the botanical origin, it is from maize. -

The dextrose equivalent (DE) is a measure of the amount of reducing sugars present in a starch hydrolysate, expressed as a percentage on a dry basis relative to dextrose. The dextrose equivalent value is inversely proportional to the average degree of polymerization (DP) and number average molecular weight (Mn). The relationship between DE, Mn and DP is the following:
DE =M_dextrose/M_n ×100 ≈180/(180×DP-18×(DP-1))×100
with Mdextrose the molecular weight of dextrose. -
The Dextrose Equivalent (DE) number is used to classify maltodextrins and glucose syrups based on their degree of hydrolysis, which indicates the extent to which the starch has been broken down into smaller sugar molecules. The DE value ranges from 1 to 100, with higher numbers indicating higher levels of hydrolysis and higher amounts of simple sugars like glucose.
Maltodextrins typically have a DE value between 1 and 20, while glucose syrups and dehydrated glucose syrups have a DE value ranging from 20 to 100 (100 being the value obtained for pure glucose). The DE value is significant because it correlates with the sweetness, the viscosity, the glass transition temperature or the moisture sorption. -
