Polyesters PBS: Packaging, disposable plastic-based products, and many more

Environmentally-friendly packaging is not just about recycling. The production process and raw materials can also boost the sustainability of packaging. Bio-based plastics enable the development of greener packaging solutions with enhanced performance. Polybutylene succinate (PBS) makes a great candidate to contribute to cleaner end-of-life options and lower disposal costs where it is impossible to reuse or recycle.

Polybutylene succinate (PBS) is a biodegradable material which can be derived from BIOSUCCINIUM® bio succinic acid. PBS compounds offer various benefits such as heat resistance and well-balanced mechanical properties for different applications.

Add biodegradable materials to your food serviceware

Collecting, cleaning and reusing serviceware is not always a viable option. Compostable plates, cups and cutlery are attractive alternatives which can be disposed and composted together with food residues and other organic waste streams. This helps to keep waste out of landfill and can reduce disposal cost.

Injection moulded products, such as cutlery, benefit from the high crystallinity of PBS which allows for efficient high-volume production of heat resistant products.

Typically, paper beverage or coffee cups are coated with a polyethylene (PE) film which can make them difficult to recycle. Coating cups with PBS may be a solution to this, as they can be recycled or re-pulped and in addition, could be disposed through composting.

Open up a range of sustainable packaging opportunities

Single-serve coffee capsules represent a fast growing market. The high fraction of water and coffee grounds make them difficult to incinerate or recycle. Capsules based on PBS (polybutylene succinate) combine compostability with the required heat resistance.

Single-use shopping bags are being phased out in many regions. Compostable plastic bags based on bio-based PBS copolyesters can help meet regulations such as France and Italy’s ban on disposable bags.

Multilayer films and laminates are popular materials for pouches. PBS spouts & zippers, and PBSA (polybutylene succinate adipate) seal layers enable compostable laminates, preventing them from ending up in landfill or incineration.

Compostable food trays made from bio-based PBS offer an alternative and viable waste disposal route. When contaminated trays are unsuitable for recycling, biodegradable solutions can have a lower environmental impact.

Cultivate your crops with compostable applications

Traditional plastics have supported agriculture and horticulture for many years. Well-known examples include mulch films, greenhouse films, irrigation systems, plant pots, and a multitude of auxiliary products. Modern bio-based plastics, based on BIOSUCCINIUM®, can completely degrade in compost or soil. Compostable plastics offer alternative disposal scenarios when it is difficult to collect and recycle products at the end of their lifespan.

It is often difficult to recycle fossil-based PE mulch films due to contamination with soil and agrochemicals. Biodegradable mulch films are becoming more popular as they perform just as well and can be ploughed into the soil, where they break down into water and carbon dioxide.

Biodegradable nets represent a recent but developing application segment. Whether used for packaging, wrapping or as a soil reinforcement for bulbs or grass, such nets can offer significant advantages. There is no need for removal and disposal at the end of use as they break down into water and carbon dioxide.

Compostable plastics can be used for smaller products such as garden tools, utensils, clips and ropes. Such products may occasionally be lost or forgotten in the outdoor environment where they will eventually degrade and decompose into water and CO2.
