Protein source corn gluten for animal feed

Known as gluten or corn gluten meal, Glutalys® is obtained by physical separation during the refining of corn starch.

Introduction

It is a highly digestible protein concentrate rich in sulfur amino acids (methionine cystine) and a source of natural efficient and stable pigments.

A polyvalent protein source it offers advantages in numerous applications:

  • Feed for broilers and layers since it helps accentuate the yellow coloration of yolks as well as sub-cutaneous fat.
  • Formulas for ruminants because of the low natural degradability of the protein fraction in the rumen and its high post ruminal digestibility.
  • Feed for young animals such as piglets thanks to its very high nutritional value.
  • Formulas for pets because it provides quality protein intake with a low ash content.
  • For fish as a good source of protein.

GLUTALYS® is a protein concentrate extracted from maize by a wet milling process. Maize gluten is a particularly digestible protein source, rich in natural pigments and with a low ash content.

Applications

Piglet feed

Corn gluten is appreciated in piglet feed for its high digestibility and the absence of anti-nutritional factors.
It also has a low ash content: less than 1 % (on product as is).
Its amino acid profile is complementary to that of other protein sources traditionally used in piglet feed such as potato protein.
Corn gluten is generally incorporated at 2 to 4%.

Poultry feed

Corn gluten is particularly suited for broilers feed and layers feed:

  • Corn gluten meal is a protein concentrate rich in sulfur amino acids with excellent amino acid digestibility ranging from 90 to 98% depending on the individual amino acid.
  • Rich in natural pigments it is used to accentuate the pigmentation of the egg yolk and sub-cutaneous fat. The two principal pigments lutein and zeaxanthin are concentrated at 11 to 12 times the levels found in corn. These pigments are recognized today for their favorable effects on human health (source of natural antioxidants).
  • Corn gluten is also highly appreciated for its fat content both as an energy source and as an aid to the favorable absorption of pigments.
  • Its low potassium content 1.5 g/kg is far less than that of most equivalent ingredients. This is a key advantage when it comes to avoiding problems of wet litter and dirty eggs.
  • The natural non-genetically modified origin of Roquette corn gluten is particularly appreciated in the production of eggs and broilers under official quality certification.

Corn gluten can be incorporated at a rate of 5 to 15% in most poultry formulations.

Ruminant feed

Corn gluten contains proteins that are naturally protected from degradation in the rumen (bypass proteins) but they are very well digested in the intestines:

  • Bypass proteins: 71%.
  • Digestibility in the intestines: 90%.

It is a raw material that is particularly recommended to supply the additional protein needs of high-producing dairy cows and to improve the protein content of milk.
The natural non-genetically modified origin of Roquette corn gluten is particularly appreciated in areas of cheese production under official quality labeling.Corn gluten can be incorporated at rates of 5 to 20% in compound feeds for ruminants.

Pet food

Corn gluten provides a reliable consistent protein intake suited to the manufacture of extruded feed for pets:

  • High protein content: 60% (Nx6.25 - on product as is). Good digestibility of the protein and amino acids. Absence of complex polysaccharidesAbsence of anti-nutritional factors.
  • It contributes to the colouration of dry foods thanks to its high content in yellow-orange pigments.
  • Its low ash content and high protein digestibility make it an ingredient that is particularly appreciated in dry food for cats.

Aquafeed

In fish feed, corn gluten is highly regarded for its high protein digestibility (94%-INRA 2002) and its low ash content.

It is a substitute for fishmeal and is well suited for the manufacture of extruded feed. Corn gluten can be incorporated at rates of 5 to 10% in feed for trout and salmon and up to 20% in feed for bass and sea bream.
